Summer Membership Picnic
Sunday afternoon, August 30th
Suzanne Youngblood will cordially open the doors of her home,
Middlekauff Manor (Jacob Middlekauff
House) c. 1805, a Federal style house,
Georgian in transition, for HGAC's
Annual Membership Picnic.
The
location at the foothills of the South Mountains was a
natural
for
early settlement----Native Americans, Buchanan family (merchant mill/trading post)
c. 1750, Cross family (slave holders) 1790’s, politically
active Middlekauff family 1798-1823, and the Confederate encampment ( Deardorff
family) June 28-30, 1863.
An archaeological site (Buchanan’s Merchant Mill) was
discovered in the summer of 2005.
Artifacts include: arrowheads, English/Spanish coins, wine bottles, china and redware
shards. Restoration on the house began in 1996 and every attempt was made to restore it authentically.
The dwelling exhibits outstanding architecture in the free-standing spiral staircase, 7 fireplaces, 2 bake ovens and
an original Pine Grove Franklin Stove.
